Welcome to the college football FBS point tracker! No opinions here on who is the best, just a quantitative comparison based on how good were the teams that you beat. This upset some people last year, as you get into the discussion of "How can you rank that team higher than my team when my team beat that team?" But remember, this is ranking based on all of a team's opponents.

For the 2017-2018 season, it provided a final season ending ranking (prior to Conference championships) of Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Miami and Clemson. Thus it predicted 3 of the 4 playoff teams, with Clemson being just out of the running.

This is a "two deep" point scoring methodology. Points are awarded to a team based upon them defeating their opponent, and the FBS opponents that team has defeated. For example if your team defeats an opponent that over the course of the season defeated 5 FBS teams, your team could accumulate 5 FBS points. This site was put together using our database reporting tool called QLR Manager.

In addition, a 3 deep analysis has been added which takes into a account the records of teams that were defeated by the team that your team defeated. Click on the fbs_points linked field to see how the data has been calculated for both 2 and 3 deep analysis.

The teams in each FBS conference are assigned a point value. The "Power 5" conference teams and the Independent teams are assigned a point value of 1. The other conferences have a lesser point value; some at .9 and the remainder at .8. Conference point values can be found here.

This site was put together for two reasons:

  • We love college football and wanted to put forth a quantitative methodology for ranking teams. This approach rewards teams that play, and of course win, against the teams who themselves have the most wins. There are no points awarded for beating cupcakes. Only FBS teams are worth points.
  • We wanted to test and highlight the capabilities of QLR Manager. QLR Manager is a server based database reporting tool that provides the ability to easily develop real time reports that can be published on the web. Everything that you see here, including this page, was done using QLR Manager.

If an FBS team is not listed, it is because they have yet to defeat an FBS team who have themselves beaten an FBS team. They have yet to earn any points.
